Hiatus ensemble

by Epienter · 30 June 2022

Lensemble]h[iatus is an international ensemble of new music created in 2006 at the initiative of the cellist Martine Altenburger and percussionist Lê Quan Ninh.

Modular and variable geometry, its peculiarity is that its members have both experience as interpreters and as improvisers.

The projects presented by this formation fully reflect this reality: more than interpreting pieces from the repertoire of the 20th and 21st century, it is for the whole to propose paths combining written pieces and improvisations in a permanent oscillation between the two disciplines highlighting the coherences or ruptures of artistic practices which are all too often considered to be antinomic. The long-tested experiences of interpretation and improvisation underpin the unique vision of contemporary music that the ensemble wants to share: music not only from those who write but also from those who play it, who are, in a way, daily on the sound field, who experience its transformations due to a patient proximity to the musical material and instrument.

Interpret / Improvise

For each of the members of the ensemble]h[iatus, interpret and improvise are two essential disciplines nourishing one another and between which they stand as artists.

The oscillations that allow this work do not describe a hesitation but rather the assertion that a true musical art lies in the hiatus between the two disciplines. In this hiatus there is not only an aesthetic and artistic questioning but also and especially the people who live it. They finally claim a pride to be a musician, i.e. to be at the service of music whether it comes from writing or from their own abilities to build in the instant with sound and silence. These oscillations – these explorations of one in between – become for them the music itself.
